Band
The Johnson Music School band program gives students the opportunity to play music together in a relaxed and collaborative environment. It’s a great way for students to experience their instrument in a completely different setting from private lessons.

Playing in a band
Playing in a group helps students develop important musical skills that are difficult to learn alone, including:
- rhythm and timing
- listening to other musicians
- ensemble playing
- musical confidence
Band is also a great way for students to meet other learners and experience music as a shared activity. While private lessons focus on individual progress, band allows students to explore their instrument as part of a group.
How the band year works
Band sessions run for one hour, once a week.
During Terms 1 and 2, band sessions are relaxed and open. Students can attend casually to explore playing in a group and help prepare music for the year.
In Term 3, students who wish to perform in the end-of-year concert begin preparing their band piece(s). Students participating in the concert are expected to commit to sessions through to the performance in Term 4.
After the concert, band sessions return to a more relaxed format.
