The School
Johnson Music School was founded by Mark and Rachel Johnson in late 2019 with a simple goal: to help students develop a genuine love of music while building strong musical skills that will last a lifetime. What began as a small one-person teaching space has grown into a thriving music school of more than 120 students and a team of dedicated teachers. Despite this growth, the philosophy of the school has remained the same. Music education should be structured, encouraging, and deeply rewarding for every student.
Fostering confident musicians
At Johnson Music School, lessons focus on building confident musicians. Students develop technique, musical understanding, and expressive playing while exploring repertoire they enjoy. Some students work towards AMEB examinations, others focus on performance, composition, or personal enjoyment. Whatever the goal, the emphasis is always on meaningful progress and long term musical development.
Teaching that adapts to each student
Every student learns differently, and our teachers take the time to understand how each student thinks and learns. Lessons may involve careful work on a single musical phrase, or the excitement of learning an entire new piece. Alongside repertoire, students develop important musicianship skills such as technique, scales, and musical awareness.
Motivation and Progress
Motivation and consistency are important parts of musical growth, especially for younger students. Johnson Music School incorporates structured goal setting and gamified learning systems that help students stay engaged with their practice and recognise their progress. Parents often tell us that their children look forward to lessons and feel proud of what they are achieving.
This focus on motivation is also part of the school’s academic interest. Co-founder Rachel Johnson is currently a PhD candidate researching how motivation develops in private instrumental students, particularly how structured support and feedback can help young musicians practise more confidently and independently at home. The ideas explored through this research inform many of the systems used at Johnson Music School, helping students stay motivated while building strong practice habits.
Our philosophy as teachers
Our teachers are musicians, but more importantly they are educators. They understand that good teaching is not about showing how well the teacher can play. It is about helping students become capable, confident musicians themselves. Our goal as teachers is simple. We want our students to become such strong and independent musicians that one day they no longer need us. A good teacher does not create dependence. A good teacher prepares a student to stand on their own as a musician.
Why families choose Johnson Music School
Families choose Johnson Music School because they see that their children are happy, supported, and improving. They see teachers who care deeply about their students and who value the learning process as much as the musical result.
Music is not just something students do for thirty minutes each week. It is a skill, a form of expression, and a lifelong companion. Johnson Music School exists to help students begin that journey.
